Killer Quad Bikes...

Quad bikes and four wheelers are smaller all terrain vehicles that are usually
used for recreational purposes such as dune hopping or drag racing A quad bike is a four-wheel drive ATV (All terrain vehicle). They are sometimes simply referred to as four wheelers. The quad bike gets its name from the idea that quad means four. Thus we understand that all quad bikes are four wheelers although there are some motorized bikes on the market that are more like tricycles.

Originally the ATV, or all-terrain vehicle, as quads are sometimes known, was developed in Japan as a three-wheeled farm vehicle. These bikes could trudge through muddy terrain and sloppy rice paddies without the driver having to put a foot on the ground. In America, these vehicles became of great use to sheep farmers who found their speed and versatility of great assistance when it came to gathering herds.

In the 1970s, three-wheeled motorized bikes were launched in America as an off-road recreational vehicle. In the 1980s the more stable four-wheeled quad bike was officially introduced as an option that catered to older or very young enthusiasts. The popularity of the quad bike was also supported by a craze for slicking up large tricycles to look like mini choppers. Today, there is a large range of quad bikes available, everything from racing models to four wheel drive versions used for agriculture to mini versions used for kids.

Driving a quad bike is like driving a cross between a motorcycle and a car. They are much safer than riding motorcycles yet at the same time still slide and lean like bikes do on wet or uneven ground. The quad's recreational appeal lies in its potential to deliver a safe driving thrill to riders both young and old. They are much safer than Harleys, for instance.

A liquid cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine that is similar to the engines installed in larger, heavier duty ATVs usually powers state of the art models. However many enthusiasts claim that quad bikes and four wheelers outfitted with a two stroke engine can take you to the same places that a four stroke engine can. The main difference is that you can't haul heavy items, such as a refrigerator in a two-stroke engine four-wheeler.

The starting system of a quad bike or four-wheeler is usually electric and the gearbox is usually a five-speed cassette with no reverse mode. The frames of the newer quad bikes and four wheelers, manufactured primarily by Japanese companies such as Yamaha and Kawasaki is usually all aluminum. Many of the smaller models weigh in at only 375 pounds.

As they are very squat vehicles, many quads and four wheelers are not that sleek or glamorous in appearance. Although they don't "look fast" like chopper motorbikes do, many of them are actually built for speed.

Both quad and four wheelers share a peculiarity when it comes to handling the machine. The handling of the vehicle actually improves the faster or harder that you drive it across the terrain. A quad or four-wheeler that is driven too slow tends to twitch a bit at the front end. This is especially true of aluminum framed quad bikes and four wheelers. The harder you push them, the better they perform.

Quad biking is enormous fun! Quad bikes have an amazing ability to climb and descend steep slopes and traverse all manner of slippery surfaces. Some of them are even aquatic! Developed for rural use, the four-wheeler is now reliable, comfortable and built to endure the elements. In short, these smaller atvs are the perfect for exploring and an alterative to walking.
